Major points from your discussion:
Concerns with the CST process as we perceive it
Seems to be a closed community, with current CST’s protecting their turf ($)
Seems to favor “rock stars”
May not take into account rural/remote areas (Birmingham, AL, France, etc)
This makes it hard to locate a mentor
Several people mentioned that they had applied, but had been rejected with little cause
Both Tom Mellor and Tobias Mayer said that an IC is currently working on a PROPOSED new CST application process
The PROPOSED application will focus on three areas
Scrum experience
Training experience
Motivation
Tobias is trying to make the new process fair, but hard and he acknowledged that it will still have some subjective bias (but they are trying to eliminate this bias as much as possible)
Advice for future CST applicants (by current CSTs)
Get connected with people you like (need to have chemistry with a mentor)
Work on your ability to wear many hats (it is necessary to put on your Scrum hat when you are training Scrum)
Develop a curriculum (focusing on learning objectives and course design)
Contribute to the community at large

Find someone who is willing to vouch for you
Respected in the community
A Raving Fan
It is going to be hard, get over it (be persistent)
