Major points from your discussion:

What is a Scrum Coach?

  • Has worked with more than 1 team

  • Has worked beyond the team into organizational changes

  • May have worked with multi-team projects

  • Uses coaching skills successfully

  • Has coached all of the Scrum Roles

  • Has coached or worked with management and roles in departments outside of software development

  • May be internal or external

What are the benefits of being a CSC?

  • Awesome global community of practice

  • Sharing of information and knowledge

  • Sharing of professional activities including partnering on coaching engagements

  • Sharing of problem solving

  • Some job opportunities are appearing

  • Promotion potential?

  • Adds value to our organizationa

  • Gives you more influence within the Scrum Alliance

  • A clear professional growth goal

What are the requirements for CSC?

  • Scrum Knowledge (as revealed through questions on the application)

  • Experience (1500 Scrum coaching hours within past 5 years)

  • Success (indicated through 2 references – may change to 3 soon)

  • Skills ((as revealed through questions on the application)

  • Fee ($750/year plus $100 application fee)

  • Community Involvement (Scrum and greater Agile)

  • CSP

What Skills/Competencies are needed?

  • Advisory and Consultation

  • Facilitation

  • Agile Leadership

  • Organizational Development

Compare CST and CSC

  • CST

    • Focus on training

    • Many CSTs also coach

    • Are about 105 CSTs

    • No explicit number target or expectation on future membership count?

    • Purpose is to transfer knowledge

  • CSC

    • Focus on coaching

    • Are 23 CSCs today

    • Target is 10 CSCs to every CST as soon as we can get there

    • Purpose is to internalize knowledge

Questions

  • What about non-Scrum Agile experience (XP, Lean, etc) ? A: It is welcome. We consider these to be part of the Agile coaching toolbox and success factors for Scrum

  • Why are there only 23 in 2 years? A: The market is only beginning to recognize the CSC. Marketing efforts have stalled because we have all been busy coaching. All work (development, improvement, reviews) are by volunteers.

  • What happens to an application after it is submitted? A: We tell you we have it. We try to provide a 60 day SLA. It goes to one of 2 review teams of 5. A consensus is required on the review team for a final decision. Phone or email contact is used if clarifications are needed to the application. Rejections include feedback on areas of improvement and (soon) will include pointers to appropriate resources.

  • How does it relate to CSP?

    • This is a guide level cert, as is the CST. These indicate specialized knowledge beyond the CSP.

    • CSP is the SA target for all members. CSC and CST are not “the next step”. Only some CSPs would care to be a certified guide.

Notes

  • It is a 3 year cert. Renewal is based on hours (1000 over 3 years) plus PDUs for various professional activities.

  • Any professional coaching training is a plus.

  • We are in the middle of planning a new promotion campaign. Look for more visibility on the SA website and other places.

  • There is NO REQUIREMENT that you have worked in multiple companies.

What suggestions do participants have for the program?

  • What are some examples of Agile leadership?

  • Can we see examples of success? A: We do not reveal applications to anyone at this time. CSPs can see other CSP apps but we have not gone there yet. We have talked about distilling app answer into a knowledge base but it is a low priority.

  • Can we get help with our applications? A: We do not have a formal process for this but will soon offer it informally through the SA Website.

  • Is there an apprentice designation to help us bootstrap the process in certification-valued environments?. A: No and no plans for such.
